The Eagles locked up their franchise quarterback earlier this week by signing Jalen Hurts to a five-year, $255 million contract extension. The Philadelphia signal-caller finished second in MVP voting and led the Eagles to a Super Bowl appearance last season.
NFL Insider Brian Baldinger of the Audacy Original Podcast “In The Huddle” explained why it looks like both the Eagles and Hurts won with this contract as well as why Philadelphia is now a desirable destination for players to come to.
“Both sides look happy to me,” Baldinger said (4:08 in player above). “Both sides look like they won. Howie Roseman, Jeffrey Lurie, the Eagles feel like they’ve got their quarterback for the next five years. Jalen Hurts feels like he’s their quarterback for the next five years. Like let’s keep building. Let’s get back to the Super Bowl and let’s finish it. That’s the key.”
The Hurts contract kind of came out of nowhere in a sense. There was no speculation or rumors of an extension being close. The Eagles and their quarterback got the deal done behind closed doors.
“There was none of this knock-out, drag-out. There was nothing being done in the press, nothing being done on Twitter,” Baldinger continued. “It’s just adults in a room going ‘We can do this. We want you. You want to be here.’”
Given how some teams deal with their stars nowadays, the way the Eagles went about this negotiation with Hurts could lead to other players wanting to land in Philadelphia.
“And now you start hearing about these other players, Carl, whether it’s Budda Baker – we can get into this. It seems like it’s a destination people want to come,” Baldinger said. “It feels like they take care of their own. They’re very fair. They want effort. They want production. They want improvement. All the stuff that everybody wants. It feels like there’s a whole bunch of adults in the room.”
The Eagles are indeed looking like a desirable destination after a 14-3 record last season and one of the best young quarterbacks in the league now locked up.
