San Diego Padres pitcher Blake Snell was named the 2023 National League Cy Young Award winner on Wednesday. Snell is the fifth Cy Young Award winner in Padres history. He joins Randy Jones (1976), Gaylord Perry (1978), Mark Davis (1989) and Jake Peavy (2007).
Snell has now won two Cy Young Awards in his eight-year Major League career. Snell won the 2018 American League Cy Young Award with the Tampa Bay Rays, and becomes the seventh pitcher to earn the honor in each league.
Snell posted a 2.25 ERA for the Padres in 2023, the lowest ERA of any qualified pitcher in the Major Leagues. Snell ranked second in the National League with 234 strikeouts.
The left-hander also had the lowest opponent batting average (.181) in Major League Baseball, 19 points lower than any other qualified pitcher.
