Games of the Week
Game of the Week:
#3 Lincoln Hornets (5-1) vs #2 Cathedral Catholic Dons (3-3) 7pm

What a way to start off Wester League play with having arguably the best two teams in the league going at it at a neutral site at Mira Mesa High School. A championship type atmosphere will be expected at this game as two of the top programs in San Diego take the field. Lincoln has had to travel all over California during non-league play and have a solid 5-1 record with their only loss coming to Bishop Alemany from the Mission League in the Southern Section. RB Roderick Robinson has been outstanding all season as the main back of the Hornets and will be the main challenge for the Dons on Friday night. Cathedral is off to a 3-3 start with a strength of schedule that is top 10 in California, but is currently riding a 17-game win streak against San Diego opponents, dating back to 2019 in which they lost to Carlsbad 21-20 in the Open playoffs after a 24-19 loss to Lincoln the week prior. Since the start of the 2018 season, the Dons are 33-4 against teams from San Diego. Cathedral all time against Lincoln has a 23-10 record with the first matchup between the to city conference teams coming in 1964 in which the Hornets won 19-13. The last time the two teams played was in the Spring Season of 2021 where Cathedral won 41-0.
Calpreps.com Prediction: #3 Lincoln 21 #2 Cathedral Catholic 17

North County Game of the Week:

#10 La Costa Canyon Mavericks (3-2) at #12 El Camino Wildcats (3-2) 7pm

Carlsbad is the favorite to win the Avocado League, but the next best challenger to knock off Carlsbad is up for grabs. El Camino had a great shot a couple weeks ago when they lost a 1 possession game while shutting out the Lancers in the 2nd half for their 2nd loss of the season. The Wildcats have a big front that rivals any line in San Diego county that will give LCC a major challenge but Sean Sovacool's group are playing some solid football right now. After sweeping the two teams from San Marcos, CA; LCC looks to to be the top contender in the Avocado League to take down Carlsbad with a win against El Camino. All time record favors the Mavericks as they are 15-6 against the Wildcats since their first football season back in 1996.
Calpreps.com Prediction: #10 LCC 22 #12 El Camino 17

City Game of the Week:

#8 Mira Mesa Marauders (4-1) at #5 Madison Warhawks (5-0) at 7pm

While two Western League teams battle it out at Mira Mesa High School, the Marauders will cruise down the 805 and take on another Western League team in the Madison Warhawks. Mira Mesa and Madison have been duking it out since the Marauders first season in 1977, which was a 12-0 win for Mira Mesa. The series is tight with Madison being 13-11, but most of that has been recent success. Since the two schools resumed playing each other in 2012, the Warhawks have dominated going 8-1 with the lone loss coming in 2018 when current San Diego State Aztec Noah Tumblin lead the Marauders to a DII CIF Championship appearance. Mira Mesa will have to rely heavily on their RB Makei Thompson if they want to pull the upset on Madison.
Calpreps.com Prediction: #5 Madison 28 #8 Mira Mesa 10

East County Game of the Week:

El Capitan Vaqueros (3-2) at Santana Sultans (2-4) 7pm

This game has a very interesting and significant father-son storyline. The Head Coach of the El Capitan Vaqueros is Ron Burner Sr.. His son Ron Burner Jr is a coach on Tim Estes staff at Santana. Burner Sr. is going for career win No. 100 on Friday night with his son standing in the way. What makes it even more significant, and amazingly ironic, is the fact that the Sultans faced the same situation last week going against Mount Miguel and their Head Coach Troy Star going for his career No 100 win. Santana prevented the Matadors celebrating their coach's 100th win and will look to do the same on Friday with more of a family connection this time around. Santana and El Cap first played in 1965 at Cajon Speedway, where the Sultans used to play their home games, in which Santana won 23-13. The Grossmont League rivals have been going at it pretty much every year since then with El Capitan leading the overall series (32-19-2) coming off a 35-0 win in 2021. Can dad get win No. 100 on Friday?
Calpreps.com prediction: El Capitan 24 Santana 21
