If the Dallas Cowboys’ offensive line can tread water without Tyron Smith, Jerry Jones thinks they’ll be getting the left tackle back at the perfect time.

Smith underwent surgery last week to repair a torn hamstring, which is expected to keep him out until December. An eight-time Pro Bowler at the most important position on the line, losing Smith is a brutal blow for a Cowboys team that already had question marks at offensive line prior to Smith’s injury.

But Smith isn't expected to be out for the season, and Jones said on 105.3 The Fan’s “Shan and RJ” that he thinks Smith should be back just in time for the “meat” of the football calendar.

“I expect to have Tyron back, and I expect to have him back right in the meat of things,” Jones said. “And anytime you can look to and see that kind of improvement coming after Thanksgiving – (and) we all have just lived last year to know when you want your best firepower to be your healthiest is as you go into those playoffs. … (I) think Tyron will be back and he’ll be back for the meat of the season.”

In the interim, Jones indicated that it’s “safe to say” rookie first-rounder Tyler Smith, thought to be the long-term left tackle down the road, will slot in for Tyron Smith.

Tyler Smith dealt with a high ankle sprain during camp, and if everyone was healthy he was on track to becoming the backup left guard behind Connor McGovern. He was a first-round pick for a reason though, and now he’ll get an early chance to prove hack it as a full-time NFL left tackle right.
