Following Casey Mize's disappointing Padres debut, Robbie Ray became the second Padres trade deadline acquisition to have a debut they'd like to forget. The veteran southpaw allowed 7 hits and walked 5 batters while allowing 4 earned runs in 5 innings of work. San Diego scored 2 runs in the 4th inning, and then Fernando Tatis Jr. blasted a solo homer in the 5th inning to bring the Padres within a run of the Astros, but that would be as close as they got. Cam Smith responded with a solo homer in the top of the 6th inning and the Astros tacked on another insurance run in the 8th inning. Michael King will draw the start on Saturday for the Padres.
