The early returns are showing another rebuild year for the Kansas City Royals, and that clearly is weighing on the fanbase.

Since winning the World Series in 2015, Kansas City has yet to even return to the postseason, and has finished fourth or fifth in the division every season since 2018. If not for the woeful Oakland Athletics, the 4-14 Royals would have the worst record in baseball through Tuesday.

Their most recent display was a shellacking they received at home Tuesday night against the Texas Rangers. The Royals only were down 3-2 heading into the sixth inning, then the bullpen coughed up nine unanswered runs.

As things unraveled for the Royals, namely when Marcus Semien's three-run homer made it 8-2, there were boos scattered across the home crowd at Kauffman Stadium. First-year manager Matt Quatraro said Wednesday in his weekly appearance on “Fescoe in the Morning” that he didn’t hear them, but understands the frustration.

“I actually didn’t hear that, but if you’re a fan and you’re paying money to watch the game and you’re not happy with what’s going on, that’s well within your rights to cheer, boo – whatever the case is,” Quatraro said. “Just know that as frustrated as you are, there’s no one more frustrated than the guys on the field or in the dugout. So we share the same sentiment, but our job is to just come back today and do a better job.”

There’s reason to have long-term optimism around the Royals. They’ve got some exciting, young talent, particularly with Bobby Witt Jr., who looks like a future star. But it’s been clear early on that all the pieces haven’t fit together yet.
