A radio host featured on pre- and postgame shows for the Seattle Seahawks was suspended over a derogatory post on social media about transgender people.
Dori Monson was removed from Seahawks coverage indefinitely after mocking transgender people on Twitter on Wednesday night, when he weighed in on the Washington gubernatorial debate between Gov. Jay Inslee and challenger Loren Culp.
“Inslee: we follow science in WA," the since-deleted tweet read. "The state where I could go to Olympia tomorrow and change my birth cert to say I was a girl on 10/2/61 HAHAHAHAHA.”
The Seahawks suspended Monson on Friday but declined to comment. Bonneville Seattle, the entity that owns the two stations where Monson works, followed suit soon after. It too declined to comment, the Seattle Times reported, which confirmed Monson's suspension.
Monson has been part of Seahawks coverage on Bonneville Seattle stations KIRO Radio 97.3 FM and 710 AM ESPN since 2002, according to the Associated Press. He also hosts a weekly interview with Seahawks coach Pete Carroll.
Monson was not on the air on Friday after his comment prompted swift criticism from observers. The Seahawks have become increasingly vocal about matters of social and racial injustice recently.
Seattle Pride was among the many groups and individuals calling for action against Monson, saying he should be terminated.
King County Equity Now on Friday tweeted at the Seahawks, “Echoing many, many others, it is long past time to completely cut ties.”
