Marcus Peters is an elite cornerback. He leads the league with five interceptions and three defensive touchdowns, and Pro Football Focus grades him as the second-best at his position in all of football. And though he’s always been considered a top defensive option, the change in scenery to Baltimore has really benefited the five-year cornerback.
He recorded a career-low in interceptions and tackles in his first season with the Rams last year, and subsequently graded quite poorly on the PFF rankings, barely cracking the top 100. His return to Los Angeles on Monday Night Football, then, was filled with extra emotion, which was soon followed by commotion.
Peters was seen chirping directly at Rams cornerback Jalen Ramsey, signed as a replacement for Peters earlier this season, from the sidelines:
It continued onto the field after the game had come to an end, with Baltimore dominating the Rams 45-6, as Peters reconnected with former teammates. Just seconds after Ramsey came near Peters, the two exchanged heated words in each other’s faces before being separated:
Ramsey, ranked as 2017’s top cornerback by PFF, has also taken a hit in his first year with the Rams. Though his sample size in Los Angeles isn’t big, he currently ranks outside the top-50 cornerbacks in the league. The Rams sacrificed two future first-round picks and moved on from Peters and Aqib Talib in order to acquire Ramsey, and though he played well against the Ravens, allowing just two catches for 12 yards on balls thrown his way, his team got trounced at home.
He’s had other rough outings this season as well, including a dismal effort against the Cincinnati Bengals in which he surrendered seven catches for 89 yards on seven targets.
Peters, on the other hand, picked off the Bengals for an 89-yard score and conceded only 22 yards a couple of weeks later. So far, it looks like Peters has won the battle of the top-tier cornerbacks in new surroundings.
