In a stunning move, the Patriots are releasing cornerback Stephon Gilmore, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Gilmore, who was the NFL's Defensive Player of the Year in 2019, was eligible to return from the physically unable to perform list in Week 7 as he continues his recovery from a torn quadriceps that ended his season last year.

ESPN's Mike Reiss reports that injury and financial considerations were both in play, with Schefter adding that the Patriots were seeking more financial flexibility and that the team and Gilmore were unable to agree to terms on a restructured contract.
Schefter reports that the free-agent market for Gilmore is "expected to be robust."
Gilmore posted a statement to social media thanking Robert Kraft and the Patriots' coaches, organization and fans.
