Jackson Merrill hit a home run for the third consecutive game, this one a decisive, go-ahead 2-run shot in the bottom of the 7th inning to lead the Padres to a 3-2 win over the NL's best team on Monday night. It continued Merrill's remarkable offensive turnaround over the past month, as he, Manny Machado and Fernando Tatis Jr. all seem to be clicking at the same time for the first time all season. Perhaps just as important from the Padres perspective, was the bounce back effort they got from Casey Mize in his Petco Park debut, as he allowed just 2 runs over 6 innings on a 2-run homer to Christian Yelich in the top of the 2nd inning, following his disastrous team debut last week. Freddy Fermin impressed behind the plate as well, throwing out two would-be base stealers, including former Padre Brandon Lockridge to seal the final out of the game. The Padres improved to 63-57, and will Walker Buehler to the mound on Tuesday.
