The champagne celebration will have to wait at least 24 hours, as the Padres were unable to clinch a playoff berth on Tuesday night, the first time they were officially able to clinch. Their magic number was 2 entering the day, but the Diamondbacks won, making it impossible for the Padres to clinch even if they won. Michael King struggled mightily, allowing five earned runs in just four innings of work. Things went awry for King in the 2nd inning, when he allowed gave up back to back 2-out singles, followed by him hitting Andy Pages with a pitch to load the bases. King then issued back to back walks to bring in the first two runs of the game, followed by a 2-run single to Freddie Freeman to open up a 4-run lead for LA. Tommy Edman and Will Smith added solo home runs later in the game to put it out of reach on a night where the Padres mustered just five hits. Robbie Ray lines up to start for the Padres on Wednesday.
