The Padres secured a much-needed win over the Nationals on Tuesday, coming from behind to win 4-3. The Padres fell behind in a 3-0 hole after 4 innings, and had to go to their bullpen early after Ryan Bergert was drilled in the right forearm by a comebacker in the 4th inning, causing him to be removed from the game. Adrian Morejon entered the game and finished the 4th inning, as well as the 5th, before Jason Adam entered in the 6th inning, showing Mike Shildt's aggressive intent to chase the win. In the bottom of the 4th inning, the Padres scored two runs on a groundout to shortstop from Xander Bogaerts and a double off the right field wall by Jake Cronenworth.

Martin Maldonado's solo homer in the bottom of the 5th inning evened the score, and then San Diego took the lead for good in the 6th when Jose Iglesias hit a slow-rolling grounder to first base with the bases loaded, allowing Gavin Sheets to score from third base. Jeremiah Estrada and Robert Suarez followed Jason Adam, as the Padres' bullpen combined for six scoreless innings after Bergert exited the game, paying off Shildt's decision to use his high leverage arms early in the game. The rubber match between these two teams will pit Nick Pivetta against MacKenzie Gore on Wednesday afternoon.
