The Padres lost to the Diamondbacks 6-3 on Monday night, in a game where the final score was less consequential than two storylines that played out during the game. Yu Darvish made his 2025 season debut, and looked good, striking out 5 while allowing 2 earned runs on 3 hits and 3 walks. Darvish threw 41 of 63 pitches for strikes, as he navigated 3.2 innings, and was lifted prior to facing All Star leadoff hitter Corbin Carroll for the third time. Darvish was able to generate 12 whiffs on just 63 pitches, which was very encouraging.

The other significant moment came in the top of the 4th inning, when Manny Machado collected the 2,000th hit of his career on a grounder through the left side of the infield. Manny drew a standing a ovation from the crowd, as he tipped his helmet in acknowledgement of the moment.

Ultimately, D'Backs starter Zac Gallen proved too much, striking out 9 over 6 innings and allowing just 1 unearned run, while the Padres again struggled to convert with runners in scoring position, going 0-6. Manny Machado added to his banner night in the 8th inning with a solo homer to make it a 6-3 game. The Padres didn't go quietly, as they loaded the bases with just one out, putting the game-tying run on first base, but Jose Iglesias popped out and Elias Diaz struck out to end the threat. But in the end, the Padres seeing Yu Darvish return to the mound should serve as a huge boost as the first half winds down.
