The Padres avoided being swept by the Cubs in Chicago with a come-from-behind 8-7 win on Sunday. Things got off to a rocky start for both teams, as Ben Brown gave up 3 earned runs in the 1st inning to give the Padres a 3-run cushion right away. But Kyle Hart gave it back immediately and then some, allowing 5 earned runs in the bottom of the frame, and wasn't even able to complete a full inning. Kyle Tucker blasted a 2-run homer off Logan Gillaspie in the 2nd, giving the Cubs a 7-3 lead.
Mike Shildt's Grit Squad did what they're accustomed to doing, and clawed their way back into the game. Jackson Merrill hit a 2-run homer in the 4th inning, Luis Arraez drove in Elias Diaz with an RBI-single in the 5th, and Gavin Sheets tied the game with an RBI-single in the 8th. In the top of the 9th inning, the Padres had runners at 1st and 2nd with 1 out, and Manny Machado hit a grounder to shortstop that should have been an inning-ending double play. But Justin Turner wasn't able to make a fairly routine catch at first base, allowing Fernando Tatis to score from third base rather than ending the inning. The Padres capitalized on the error, and Robert Suarez pitched a perfect 9th inning to earn the save. The Padres head to Sacramento for a series with the A's beginning on Monday.
