The Padres beat the Rockies 3-2 on Saturday, winning their 3rd game in a row for the first time since April 29th through May 1st. Bob Melvin told the media earlier in the week that he had a plan for Ryan Weathers, and he stuck with it, using Weathers as a bit of an opener and allowing him to pitch 3 innings of 1-run baseball, before bringing in Drew Carlton.
Gary Sanchez's hot start with the Padres continued, as he drove in the game's first run with an RBI-single in the 1st inning. Nolan Jones tied the game in the 2nd inning with a solo blast off of Weathers, and Alan Trejo put the Rockies on top 2-1 with an RBI-fielder's choice in the 5th. Fernando Tatis Jr. put the Padres back on top with a 2-out 2-run single with the bases loaded in the 6th inning.
Things got interesting when Nick Martinez entered in the bottom of the 8th to protect a 1-run lead. He allowed a leadoff single to Ezequiel Tovar, who then advanced to 2nd base on a wild pitch. Tovar advanced to 3rd base with just 1 out on Charlie Blackmon's groundout to 2nd base. Manny Machado then made perhaps the defensive play of the year, bobbling and ultimately catching a foul ball over his shoulder in left field to secure the 2nd out of the inning. Jurickson Profar then drew a walk to put runners on the corners, but Martinez then got Randal Grichuk to pop out to shortstop to end the threat. Then Josh Hader came in to pitch a 1-2-3 9th inning to secure his 15th save of the season.
