The Padres defeated the Diamondbacks 5-3, following a Mets loss to the Brewers, and clinched the top wild card spot on Friday night, which guarantees them home field advantage in the Wild Card round of the playoffs. The Padres got to Arizona starter Merrill Kelly early, scoring four runs in the 1st inning. Manny Machado, Jackson Merrill and David Peralta each had RBI-singles, while Xander Bogaerts also drove in a run on a fielder's choice to shortstop. Yu Darvish wasn't his sharpest, and allowed a leadoff homer to Corbin Carroll in the bottom of the 1st and another run to come home on a sacrifice fly from Lourdes Gurriel. After doubling to lead off the game, Luis Arraez drove in Kyle Higashioka in the 4th inning with a 2-out triple to make it a 5-2 game. Darvish would pitch into the 6th inning and exit with a runner on base that would eventually come around to score and be charged to him. All in all, Darvish was charged with 3 earned runs in 5.1 innings of work. He threw 50 of 80 pitches for strikes, and worked around three walks. Robert Suarez also calmed some concerns, allowing just one walk and no hits to earn his 36th save of the year.
