The Padres lost a heartbreaker to the Reds 5-3 in 11 innings on Tuesday night. Lucas Giolito didn't have his best stuff, and battled through 4 innings, allowing just two earned runs. The Padres fought back and tied the game in the 3rd thanks to an RBI-triple from Jackson Merrill and an RBI-single from Manny Machado. That score would hold all the way through the end of 9 innings, but it wasn't as if the Padres didn't have chances to pull ahead. Freddy Fermin hit into an inning-ending double play with the bases loaded in the 6th inning, Machado was stranded at third base with one out in the 8th inning, and then with the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the 9th, Machado and Gavin Sheets both struck out consecutively to send the game to extras. The Reds drove in one run in the top of the 10th, but Samad Taylor was able to come through again with a game-tying RBI-single in the bottom of the frame. Taylor then stole second base to reach scoring position with just one out, but neither Jase Bowen nor Freddy Fermin were able to bring him home. Sal Stewart hit a go-ahead two-run home run to dead center field in the top of the 11th, putting the Padres down two heading to the bottom of the 11th, where Sung-Mun Song, Fernando Tatis Jr. and Jackson Merrill were retired in order. The Padres went 3-20 with runners in scoring position and left 13 runners on base in their 5-3 loss. The Padres will also likely be without Adrian Morejon, Jason Adam and Mason Miller in Wednesday's rubber match due to their recent usage.
