The Padres held on for a 13-9 win over the Rockies at Coors Field on Friday night, in a game that ended up much closer than it should have been. The Padres built a 13-2 lead entering the bottom of the 8th inning, thanks to multi-hit efforts from Luis Arraez, Manny Machado, Jackson Merrill and Gavin Sheets, who drove in four runs himself. Martin Maldonado contributed with a 2-run homer in the 5th inning. And Randy Vasquez fared well in a tough pitching environment, allowing just 2 earned runs in 6 innings to earn a quality start.
The Padres lead was so big, that Fernando Tatis Jr., Manny Machado and Xander Bogaerts were taken out to rest late in the game. Sean Reynolds made his 2025 debut for the Padres, entering in the 8th inning with an 11-run lead. He would yield 4 earned runs while recording just 2 outs, and was then relieved by Wandy Peralta, who allowed 1 more run in what turned into a 5-run inning. Peralta would come back to pitch the 9th inning, and exited after allowing a leadoff single. Alek Jacob then entered the game and allowed 2 more runs to score, and with 2 baserunners aboard in a 13-9 game, it was now a save situation. Mike Shildt was forced to bring Robert Suarez into the game on a night where it seemed all but certain he'd have the night off, but he was able to secure his 15th save and remain perfect on the season. Stephen Kolek will get the start for the Padres on Saturday.
