The Padres beat the Guardians 7-2 on Monday night to improve to 5-0 for the first time in franchise history. Gavin Sheets was the story of the game, going 3-3 with two doubles, a walk, 4 RBIs and 2 runs scored. Kyle Hart made his Padres debut and first MLB start since 2020, and held his own against the reigning AL Central champs, allowing just 2 earned runs in 5 innings to go along with 4 punchouts.
Jose Ramirez jumped on a Hart in the 1st inning with a solo homer, but the Padres immediately responded in the bottom of the inning, scoring 4 runs on a 2-run double from Sheets, a sac-fly from Jason Heyward and an RBI-single from Fernando Tatis. The Padres never looked back. Sheets added another 2-run double in the 5th to make it 6-2, and Heyward added an RBI-double for good measure to extend the cushion to 5 runs. The bullpen continued to impress with four more scoreless innings as well. Michael King will draw the start on Tuesday against Logan Allen
