The Padres lost one of the most dramatic games of the year to the Astros on Tuesday night, losing 4-3 in 10 innings. The Astros scored two runs in the 4th inning off of Michael King, but that would be all the scoring he'd allow over 7 innings of work. Manny Machado blasted a game-tying 2-run homer in the 6th inning. Yordan Alvarez would score from third base on a wild pitch by Jason Adam in the top of the 8th inning. In the bottom of the frame with Fernando Tatis Jr. on 3rd base with two outs, Josh Hader was brought in to attempt a 4-out save, something Padres fans let him hear about through loud boos. Hader would throw a wild pitch allowing Tatis to score from 3rd to tie the game at 3. The game would go to extra innings, where Kyle Tucker's RBI-single would put the Astros back on top. Hector Neris was brought in to close things out in the bottom of the 10th for the Astros, and allowed the automatic runner Tyler Wade to advance to third base on a wild pitch, giving the Padres the game-tying run 90 feet away with no outs. Elias Diaz then drew a walk, putting runners at the corners with no outs. Luis Arraez grounded into a fielder's choice, and then Fernando Tatis Jr. struck out. Jurickson Profar would be hit by a pitch to load the bases for Manny Machado with two outs. Machado hit a sharp grounder up the middle, but the Astros were able to field the ball with a diving play and get the force out at second base to end the game in wild fashion. The two teams will play the rubber match of this series on Wednesday afternoon.
