The Padres split Wednesday's doubleheader with the Phillies, with starting pitching being the key difference in the games. Nick Pivetta was fantastic again in the early game, allowing just 1 run in 6 innings and earning his 9th win of the season. Meanwhile, Dylan Cease's struggles continued, as the talented righty gave up 4 runs on 8 hits in 6 frames. It was the same story with the Phillies starters, as the Padres got to opposing pitcher Mick Abel early for 5 runs in 2 innings in the early game, while Game 2 starter Christopher Sanchez cruised through 7 frames allowing just 1 run. San Diego's offense continued to struggle, combining for just 11 hits over both games. They made the most of their 5 hits in Game 1, and scored 6 runs, thanks in large part to a 5-run 2nd inning when Abel 4 hitters, including 3 in a row. The Padres will enjoy a much needed off day on Thursday before returning home to face the Rangers beginning on Friday.
