The Padres will live to fight another day, as they beat the Brewers 4-3 in dramatic fashion at Petco Park in Game 3 of the NLDS on Tuesday night. Jackson Merrill set the tone early with two incredible diving catches. The Padres pushed two runs across home in the bottom of the 3rd inning on a grounder from Fernando Tatis Jr. drove in Samad Taylor and an RBI-single from Manny Machado that brought Jackson Merrill home. Both runs were made possible by Taylor and Merrill's aggressiveness on the basepaths, as both stole second base. Nick Pivetta pitched well, tossing three scoreless innings before William Contreras took him deep in the 4th inning to make it a 2-1 game. He exited in the 5th inning with runners on and Jason Adam was able to limit the damage, allowing just one run to come home on a shallow sac-fly off the bat of Jackson Chourio. Jake Cronenworth immediately responded with a solo homer in the bottom of the 5th inning to put the Padres back on top 3-2. Xander Bogaerts hit a 2-out single in the bottom of the 6th, and then advanced to second base on a wild pitch from DL Hall. Miguel Andujar then hit a broken bat chopper to shortstop, and Cooper Pratt made a poor throw that Jake Bauers wasn't able to catch cleanly at first base, allowing Bogaerts to come all the way around and score, giving San Diego a crucial insurance run. With Mason Miller unavailable after being added to the paternity list prior to the game, and Adrian Morejon surprisingly also unavailable after not recovering fully from his last outing, Michael King dramatically entered the game in the 8th inning to protect a one-run lead after starting Game 2 on Sunday. After a harmless 8th inning where he allowed just one hit, he came back out to pitch the 9th and attempt to earn a six-out save. After striking out Bauers to begin the inning, he issued back to back walks to William Contreras and Brice Turang, before getting Christian Yelich to ground into a game-ending double play to force a Game 4 on Wednesday evening.
