The Padres bounced back from a disappointing loss on Tuesday to beat the Marlins 4-0 on Wednesday and take the series from a team ahead of them in the wild card standings. Bob Melvin's decision to start Seth Lugo instead of Rich Hill paid off, as Lugo hurled 6 shutout innings to put the Padres in excellent position to win the game. Juan Soto drove in Ha-Seong Kim in the 1st inning to get the Padres on the board, and Xander Bogaerts blasted a 2-run homer in the 6th to tack on some much needed insurance runs in what was a 1-0 game through 6. Fernando Tatis would add an RBI-single for good measure in the 7th.

After cruising through the first 7 innings, there was some drama in the final two, as setup man Robert Suarez was ejected from the game without facing a batter after being inspected by the umpires for foreign substances, and will face a 10-game suspension, though he could appeal. Tom Cosgrove replaced Suarez and pitched a perfect 8th, setting the stage for Josh Hader to enter the game with a 4-run lead in the 9th. After allowing a leadoff single to Josh Bell, Hader walked Jazz Chisholm, struck out Jake Burger, and then walked Bryan De La Cruz to load the bases with just 1 out. But Hader struck out Garrett Hampson and Yuli Gurriel back-to-back to end the game and give the Friars the series win. The Padres will have the day off on Thursday before a 6-game road trip to Milwaukee and St. Louis.
