The Padres got a huge win over the Red Sox on Sunday afternoon, thanks to another fantastic outing from Dylan Cease, more lockdown relief pitching from the team's bullpen and timely hitting from the offense. Cease threw six scoreless innings before returning for the 7th inning and running into some trouble. He exited after allowing a walk and a single to begin the 7th inning. Jason Adam entered the game and beaned the first batter he faced, loading the bases with no outs and the Padres trailing 5-0. Xander Bogaerts then booted a grounder that likely would have been a double play, allowing two runs to score. After Wilyer Abreu's single re-loaded the bases, Adam struck out the next two hitters he faced. Mike Shildt then opted to bring in Adrian Morejon to face left-handed rookie Roman Anthony, who Morejon struck out to strand the bases and loaded.

The Padres got contributions from all over their starting lineup. Fernando Tatis Jr. reached base four times, drove in a run and scored twice. Luis Arraez had two more hits, including a 2-run double to put the Padres on the board in the 3rd inning, and newly acquired catcher Freddy Fermin went 2-4 with a run scored. San Diego went 3-8 with runners in scoring position, and were able to tack on an insurance run after Boston's 7th inning rally to give some extra cushion for David Morgan, who retired the final five batters of the game in order, striking out three of them. The Dodgers lost shortly after the conclusion of the Padres' game, narrowing their lead in the NL West to just 2 games. The Padres now travel to San Francisco for a 3-game series against the Giants, before matching up against the Dodgers in LA later in the week.
