The Padres defeated the Mets 7-1 in Game 1 of the Wild Card series in what was billed as a pitching duel between two stars, but ended up being one-sided. Yu Darvish lived up to the billing, allowing just 1 run over 7 innings while working out of a 1st inning jam. But Max Scherzer was hammered early and often by the Padres, giving up 4 home runs, including a 2-run blast to Josh Bell in the 1st inning, a solo shot to Trent Grisham in the second to give the Padres a 3-0 lead. Jurickson Profar broke the game wide open in the 5th with a 3-run blast, followed by a solo shot from Manny Machado that gave the Padres a 7-0 lead in the 5th. The Mets added a run on a solo homer from Eduardo Escobar in the bottom of the 5th, but it was too little too late. The Padres will have an opportunity to eliminate the Mets in Game 2 on Saturday, as Blake Snell squares off against Jacob deGrom.
