The Padres defeated the Rockies 21-0 at Coors Field on Saturday night, but despite scoring 21 runs, their hitting wasn't actually the top storyline. In just his second career start, Stephen Kolek pitched a 5-hit shutout, needing just 104 pitches to go the distance. It was a positive sign for the outlook of the Padres rotation that has searched for a consistent fifth starter all year, and may have found one in the former Rule-5 draft pick.
San Diego's offense was relentless, scoring in each of the first six innings of the game, including five runs in the 1st, eight runs in the 4th and four runs in the 5th inning. The Padres blasted five home runs, as Fernando Tatis Jr., Jason Heyward, Xander Bogaerts, Jake Cronenworth and Gavin Sheets all took advantage of the thin Colorado air. Tatis' home run was the 136th of his career, moving him past the great Tony Gwynn and into sole possession of sixth place on the franchise's all-time home run list. The Padres have now scored 34 runs in the last two games at Coors Field, and will have a chance to sweep their second series on this road trip with a win on Sunday.
