Yu Darvish struggled once again, allowing 8 earned runs in just 3.1 innings in his fourth start of the season since returning from an elbow injury, inflating his ERA to 9.18. The Padres' offense spotted Darvish a 2-run lead before he threw a pitch, but he allowed a run in the bottom of the 1st and then six more in the bottom of the 2nd inning, with both Brendan Donovan and Willson Contreras hitting 3-run homers. The Padres' offense clawed back into the game when Fernando Tatis and Manny Machado each homered in the third inning to make it a 7-5 deficit. After St. Louis scored a run in the 4th inning, the Padres rallied for two more runs in the 5th to make it an 8-7 game. But that would be as close as the Padres would get, as their comeback fell short and they lost 9-7. Nick Pivetta will try to put an end to the Padres' 3-game losing streak on Friday afternoon.
