The news came just three days after it was first reported by ESPN's Adam Schefter that Brady was, in fact, calling it a career.

In the ensuing days, Brady's camp mounted a furious denial campaign, enlisting the services of friendly media and even Brady's father, Tom Sr., to suggest that the report was erroneous or even a fabrication.

As recently as Monday afternoon, Brady himself indicated during a podcast appearance that he was not yet ready to render a verdict.

"It's day-to-day with me," Brady told veteran journalist Jim Gray. "I am not going to race to some conclusion about that," he later added.

On Monday night, Gray appeared on FOX News with host Sean Hannity, and again reiterated that Brady had not yet "come to a decision" about his football future.

It's plausible Brady had an overnight epiphany, but it seems more likely that he'd already made up his mind and delayed confirming the report because he was annoyed at having been scooped.

When news broke early Tuesday morning, several journalists and fans on social media vented some frustration over the seemingly misleading comments and half-truths.
