‘The Real World’ original cast reunites in iconic NYC loft 29 years later: ‘It was surreal’

The original cast of the hit ‘90s reality show “The Real World” is back in the same New York City apartment where the iconic MTV series was filmed nearly three decades ago.

The "seven strangers picked to live in a house" reunited ahead of “The Real World Homecoming: New York,” a six-episode Paramount Plus reboot of the original series, which is credited for being one of TV’s first reality franchises in entertainment history, USA Today reports.

"It was surreal," said Heather B. Gardner, one of the housemates from the inaugural 1992 season of MTV's pioneering reality series.

The 50-year-old appears in the reboot alongside her six former castmates, Becky Blasband, Andre Comeau, Julie Gentry, Norman Korpi, Eric Nies and Kevin Powell, who were originally cast for their different personalities and backgrounds.

"The Real World," which aired from 1992 to 2017, gained nationwide popularity and stands as the longest-running program in MTV history.

Each season, the show picked seven to eight young adults to temporarily live in a new city together while being filmed around the clock. Following New York, the series moved to San Francisco, Los Angeles, Boston, Las Vegas, and Chicago, among others.

The unscripted series was created by Jonathan Murray and the late Mary-Ellis Bunim. Murray is now the Executive Producer for the reboot series, which is set to premiere on streaming service Paramount+.

"What surprised me most was how quickly the same rapport was there. It was like those almost 30 years disappeared the way this group took up life together again," Murray said. "The essence of who those people were, it's still there. They're just a little more experienced."

The new reboot will cover sensitive topics, such as race, religion, and politics.

"Some heavy topics were covered and not all of it was comfortable," original cast member Andre Comeau said. "Not everything is perfect in real life, and our show is no different."

"The Real World Homecoming: New York " premieres March 4 on Paramount+, with new episodes every Thursday.
