I usually write about things I enjoy, but this week it's something I despise: pollen!!! I've been miserable all week due to a stuffy head and scratchy throat. Why is something that makes the world so beautiful with Spring blooms so evil to our noses??
I'm taking all the meds and they're starting to kick in, but in the meantime, I'm wondering if there might be more that I can do to battle this terrible "Hay Fever" (as my mom used to call it).
Here are 5 natural things the internet says you can do to help battle sneezy, itchy allergy season:
1. Eat local honey
The theory behind this is that since local honey carries the pollen that you are most allergic to, eating it will help build up your immunity to it. I've seen mixed reviews on this one because you might have to eat a LOT of honey to have any results, but it's worth a try. Mmmm, honey!
2. Use a Neti-Pot
Since your nose and sinuses are full of the pollen that is making you sneeze, it makes sense that flushing them out should help to relieve your allergies! Just don't attempt this one in front of anyone you're trying to impress - it's not attractive!
3. Spring Cleaning
I think this one might stir up more pollen than relieve it, but experts say getting it out of your home will help relieve your symptoms. Maybe you can get your kids to do the cleaning for you?
4. Stay Indoors
It's hard to do this one since we finally have nice weather and all we want to do is get outside, but...that's where the pollen is! So while the trees and flowers are doing their thing, it's best to limit your time outside as much as possible.
5. Wash it all off!
If you do spend time outside, take a shower as soon as you come in and take your clothes straight to the laundry room. If that yellow stuff can cling that tightly to our cars, you know it must be stuck to us, too! Wash your hair, face, even eyelashes.
Even though all I want to do is hide under the covers and sleep until the pollen goes away, that's not possible. So let's try a few of these and hopefully we'll be feeling better and able to enjoy the outdoors again soon!
Achooooo!!
