St. Patrick's Day is the day that "everyone is Irish" and has been celebrated in the USA since 1737 when a group of Irishmen gathered together in Boston. It's always been my favorite holiday, thanks to my mom. Her side of the family was part Irish (of Clan MacEgan) and she and her siblings loved to get together every March 17th to celebrate!

Since large gatherings are still prohibited in North Carolina, St. Patrick's Day celebrations are a lot different this year. However, that doesn't mean you can't raise a pint of Guiness and amuse your (very small or Zoom) gathering of friends with these Irish sayings!

5 Sayings to Make Your Friends Laugh on St. Patrick's Day!

1. "If you're lucky enough to be Irish, then you're lucky enough"
This one is a little biased towards those of authentic Irish blood, but since we're ALL Irish on St. Patrick's Day, we're all lucky enough!

2. "As you slide down the bannister of life, may the splinters never point in the wrong direction"
This is a wish that you don't have obstacles or bad luck in your life because...ouch.

3. "May your troubles be as few and as far apart as my Grandmother's teeth"
No offense to grandmothers, of course! It's an old saying and, in the past, dental care was not what it is today!

4. "May the cat eat you and the Devil eat the cat"
This is actually an insult for your enemies. Leave it to the Irish to say "go to H*ll" in such an eloquent way!

5. "A kind word never broke anyone's mouth"
I like this one because it's true. It's always better to be kind and it surely won't kill ya to say a nice thing!

Crank up some Irish bands - U2, Dropkick Murphys, The Cranberries, Calvin Harris, Van Morrison, Thin Lizzy, Snow Patrol, Sinead O'Connor - pour a cold pint of Guiness or your favorite beer with green food coloring in it, and have a wonderful St. Patrick's Day! Slainte'!
