Since its release in 2002, John Mayer’s hit, “Your Body Is a Wonderland,” has raised questions from fans all over about who inspired the sultry single. While many have believed for years the song is linked to one of Mayer’s first A-list lovers, he recently set the record straight.

“That was about my first girlfriend,” he shared on Alex Cooper’s “Call Her Daddy”  podcast before clarifying he’d "never even met a celebrity" when he wrote it. "I was 21 when I wrote that song, and I was nostalgic for being 16.”

The nostalgia was strong for Mayer, who also admitted he tried to re-kindle the flame with his high school sweetheart before learning she was married with children.

“I did reach back out a few times,” the 45-year-old shared. “Maybe to bring that part of my life into the new part of my life. But by that point she was married and had kids, and I thought, ‘That’s a separate chapter.’”

Mayer went on to have some high-profile romances in the entertainment industry, but now he says dating is no longer a regular part of his life like it used to be.

“I don’t date that much,” he said. “I look at it like this: Dating is no longer a codified activity for me. ... It’s not patterned anymore.”

Mayer credits sobriety for the change in lifestyle saying he no longer has the “liquid courage,” he relied on to make moves.

“I quit drinking six years ago, I don’t have the liquid courage (anymore),” he said before detailing how vulnerable he feels the dating world can be without a buffer.

“You have to be glaringly honest,” he stated. “'Here’s who I am. Here’s what I like. Here’s what makes me nervous. Here’s what I reject as an idea in a relationship.’ You have to express your anxieties. You can’t just walk over them by drinking. You have to be like, ‘Here’s what I’m anxious about.’ And when someone in life accommodates your anxiety, that’s bonding.’”
