Sophie Turner has been cast in the upcoming HBO Max limited series, “The Staircase.”
The “Game of Thrones” star joins an impressive cast for the series, based on the 2004 French documentary of the same name that chronicled the real-life death of Kathleen Peterson and the protracted, years-long court battle that ensued.
Turner will portray Margaret Ratliff, an adopted daughter of main character Michael Peterson, who was tried for the murder of his wife, Kathleen, in the case that eventually split open a myriad of family secrets.
While the 2004 French documentary, a series of updated Netflix docs, and a great podcast covered the story well, the star-studded cast -- featuring Colin Firth, Toni Collette, Juliette Binoche, Rosemarie DeWitt and Parker Posey -- should make those interested in the tale come back for more salacious stories.
This is Turner’s’ latest role after a brief post-”Thrones” hiatus due to the birth of her and husband Joe Jonas’ first child, Willa, last July, about a year after they had their official marriage ceremony in France.
In the rash romanticism of young love, the pair had previously rushed off to a Vegas elopement, Elvis impersonator officiant in tow of course, right after leaving the Billboard Music Awards in May, 2019.
According to Fox News, Turner hasn’t just been playing mommy. She’s kept busy with the Quibi projects "Survive" and “The Princess Bride” remake, as well as the crime flick, "Heavy." She’s also set for yet another HBO Max show, the animated "The Prince,” based on Prince William and Kate Middleton’s oldest son, Prince George.
“The Staircase” is written and executive produced by showrunners Antonio Campos, known for "The Devil All the Time," and Maggie Cohn, known for "American Crime Story." No release date has been announced yet.
