When guitarist Wes Borland's left Limp Bizkit in 2001, the band obviously was on the search for a replacement.
Little did they know they would come into contact with literal rock loyalty, which eventually would lead to Fred Durst having a gun pulled on him…after a tank had been driven through his home.
The band was heading nowhere auditioning new guitarists, but their search was temporarily put on hold after Limp Bizkit frontman Fred Durst met Van Halen guitarist Eddie Van Halen at a party.
A record executive suggested the two team up together. Per Louder Sound, in the photobook Eruption in the Canyon: 212 Days & Nights With the Genius of Eddie Van Halen by Andrew Bennett, Durst said “"That would be hilarious. The greatest guitar player ever plays with the worst band ever.”
In response, Van Halen (unbelievably) said “F*ck it, let’s jam.”
So the two parties met up at Durst’s home, and it quickly turned into a disaster, with EVH describing the scene as “being a scholar amongst kindergartners.”
Limp Bizkit started smoking weed, of which EVH wasn’t a fan of, so he left the home, leaving all his musical equipment behind. He tried contacting Durst the following day to get his gear back, but heard no response.
This irked EVH, so he gave it another 24 hours before he took matters into his own hands.
Apparently, EVH had purchased as assault vehicle at an auction that had a “shine gun mount on the back.”
It was not legal to drive.
Still, that didn’t stop EVH from driving to Durst’s house, and parking the tank in front of it.
According to Bennett, EVH “got out wearing no shirt, his hair in a Samurai bun on top of his head, his jeans held up with a strand of rope and combat boots held together by duct tape. And he had a gun in his hand.”
EVH’s perspective on the matter wasn’t all that different.
According to Bennett, he said, “That a**hole answered the door. I put my gun to that stupid f*cking red hat of his, and I said, ‘Where’s my sh*t, motherf*cker?’ That f*cking guy just turned to one of his employees and starts yelling at him to grab my sh*t..”
Apparently, all the equipment was secured, and EVH neither had to use the tank nor gun to its full capacity.
They didn’t jam together ever again.
