The town of Dickinson, Texas, located about 31 miles southeast of Houston, recently had a mayoral election that went into a runoff, with both candidates, Sean Skipworth and Jennifer Lawrence, receiving an equal amount of votes.
So to decide the mayor once and for all, the town decided to utilize an unusual method: pulling ping pong balls out of a hat.
Both candidates wrote their name on a ping pong ball, which were dropped into a hat. Dickinson mayor-elect Sean Skipworth said, "Unless the charter says that specifically, you use some random method, so we decided to draw out of a hat. That's what state law said to do, so that's what we decided to do."
The city said it did consider using other methods, like arm wrestling, but ultimately decided drawing from a hat would be most fair.
