Derek Prue Sr. noticed that whenever they would go swimming, his son Derek Jr refused to take his shirt off.
Derek Jr. was born with a massive birthmark on his chest and side, and is obviously embarrassed by it. In order to show Derek Jr. that his birthmark was nothing to be ashamed about, Derek Sr. went under the tattoo gun for 30 HOURS to get a replica birthmark tattooed on his side!
The entire procedure took about eight weeks to complete. Derek Jr was stunned when he first saw the piece. He said, "I was happy and I was a little confused. I didn't know he was going to do that."
Though the request was unlike any he had ever received, tattoo artist Tony Gibbert was happy to do it. He said, "Just being able to go swimming with his dad and take off his shirt and be happy and comfortable. I'm happy I get to be part of it, in a small way I get to help with what he's trying to do."
Derek Jr. now tells his mom he'll be able to take his shirt off to go swimming without feeling embarrassed. "Whenever Daddy's there I can take the shirt off,"
he says.
