Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva tested positive for the heart drug trimetazidine last December, though the results were only made public last week.
Her eligibility to compete in the remainder of the 2022 Winter Olympics was called into question, not to mention the fact that she's already won a gold medal in the team figure skating event!
Well less than 12 hours after a "hastily arranged" meeting, the Court of Arbitration for Sport determined that Valieva did NOT need to be "provisionally suspended" pending a full investigation, and will be continued to allowed to skate.
The court gave her a favorable decision in part because Valieva is a minor, otherwise known as a "protected person," and is subject to different rules from an adult athlete.
Along with her status as a minor, Dallas News says the CAS ruling cited "fundamental issues of fairness," including the fact that Valieva tested clean in Beijing and that there were "serious issues of untimely notification."
According to TIME, part of Valieva's defense is that the "contamination which happened with a product her grandfather was taking."
