We all know what happens when you miss too many car payments, right? The repo men come to take your car away. Repossess it.
It seems though we are about to enter a world where repo men are nonexistent, because the cause can simply repossess themselves!
Ford has recently filed a patent for new cars that have the ability to repossess themselves, and drive away ON THEIR OWN in case the owner misses too many payments.
According to The Drive, this system, which could be installed on any future vehicle with a data connection, would be capable of "[disabling] a functionality of one or more components of the vehicle," and this includes everything from the engine to the air conditioning!
And for vehicles with autonomous or semi-autonomous driving capability, the system could "move the vehicle from a first spot to a second spot that is more convenient for a tow truck to tow the vehicle... move the vehicle from the premises of the owner to a location such as, for example, the premises of the repossession agency."
Or, if things are really bad and the lender considers the "financial viability of executing a repossession procedure" to be unjustifiable, the vehicle could drive ITSELF to the junkyard!
Ford is the only automaker patenting such a system at the moment, and just for present ease of mind, just because the patent was successfully filed doesn't mean it is a practical or even a feasible system to actually put into action.
Yet.
