Some of us are the lucky few that have never been pulled over for speeding and received a ticket. For the most part, it happens to all of us.
A man in Savannah, Georgia was recently clocked going 90 in a 55-mph zone. The police caught him, pulled him over, and issued him a ticket.
Going 90 in a 55, the driver knew he was going to be hit with a pretty big fine. But even he couldn't believe the amount on the ticket: $1.4 MILLION!
In Georgia, the maximum penalty for traffic violations is $1,000, though it could be up to $5K or $10K if the driver is also hit with an "aggravated" criminal charge.
However, in this man's case, a city representative told WSAV that the man received a "super speeder" ticket, which requires a mandatory court appearance. The million-dollar fine was issue to ensure the man shows up to court, where a judge will set the final penalty.
The rep confirmed that the $1.4 million means nothing and isn't enforced, and apparently is just a bug in the system's software to set the highest amount possible for a fine when no "automatic fine" is available, as in the case of a "super speeder" ticket.
That seems like a rather easy software fix. We'd rather see "mandatory court appearance required" rather than a fine of a million dollars!
