There are few things more divisive this time of year than the argument of whether eggnog is delicious or not.

Whether or not eggnog is to your liking there is a risk associated all the same with the popular holiday beverage: a risk of salmonella!

While some argue the raw egg yolks in eggnog carry the most risk for salmonella, Dr. Don Schaffner, a Rutgers distinguished professor and extension specialist in Food Science has another theory.

He told HuffPost we should worry about the eggnog's milk and cream more saying, "The risks from raw dairy are more well established."

Though if you buy your eggnog at a store, the risk decreases greatly.  Packaged prepared eggnog is much safer," Schaffner said. "The pasteurization process is done by a food manufacturing facility that understands how to best process foods to ensure that they are safe."

Experts recommend if you're serving eggnog at a holiday party that rather than serving eggnog in a punchbowl, ladle it up a cup at a time, keeping the rest refrigerated.
