A mother in rural Georgia was recently arrested after she let her 10-year-old son walk into town by himself.

Brittany Patterson was with her other children at a doctor’s appointment, when 10-year-old Soren decided to walk into town by himself.

They live on a farm in Mineral Bluff, a town of only a few hundred people.

A bystander noticed Soren walking along the street (where the speed limit was 35mph) alone, asked if he was ok (to which he responded he was) but she still called the police.

Brittany received a call from the police notifying her they had Soren and admonished her from letting him walk alone for fear of being hit by a car or being kidnapped.

The parties met at the Patterson home, where Brittany gave Soren a stern talk.  However, later the night the police showed up back at their house, where they arrested Brittany for reckless conduct.  She was released on $500 bail.

And if that wasn’t enough, child services came by the house the next day to perform a welfare check.

The police suggested the charges could be dropped if Brittany agreed to sign something that said another adult would be a "safety person" and keep an eye on Soren when she's not home, and to also place an app on his phone to track his location.

She refused to comply with either suggestion.

According to Reason.com, if the state of Georgia decides to pursue the charges, Brittany could face a $1,000 fine and up to a YEAR in jail.
