It's one of the hottest debates in the Lone Star State: How many days of the week should kids be required to go to school?
Many school districts in Central Texas, including Academy, Riockdale, and China Spring have moved to a four-day school week, and even some districts in North Texas have considered making the adjustment.
However, Texas senator Donna Campbell (R) isn't so keen at the idea of a shorter school week, and at Thursday's legislative session brought proposed bill SB 2368 to the floor, where if passed, would prohibit shortened school weeks.
Per KWTX in Waco, Campbell is concerned the amount of education kids are receiving these days, especially as we move on from the Covid pandemic. She said, "The data about learning loss due to the covid-19 pandemic is deeply concerning to parents and families: reading scores nationally dropped to 19-92 levels and math scores showed the largest decline ever recorded."
Many districts have cited teacher retention as the main drive to shorten the school week to four days.
China Spring ISD superintendent Marc Faulkner previously told KWTX, "Some of our biggest challenges include teacher retention, and teacher shortage, the substitute shortage, student and staff attendance, those kinds of things."
