Stephany Hume is a teacher at Sewell Elementary School in Sachse.
A two-time cancer survivor, Hume was rushed to the hospital for emergency surgery, which normally would put anybody out of commission for a period of time while they recover. Not Hume, though.
Since she was rushed to the hospital in the middle of class, she sought the help of her mother, retired teacher Susie Harris, to oversee teaching duties while she went under the knife. Just hours after the surgery was complete, however, Hume was back teaching her class, via Zoom from her hospital bed.
She said, "These kids are feeling the same feelings we're feeling. They're afraid, they're unsure of what's coming next." Hume even started pestering her doctor JUST after the surgery's completion, inquiring when she could return to the classroom. "I was asking the doctor, 'Can I go now? Can I go now?' And he's like, 'You have a temperature of 102. You have to stay,'" she said.
Hume has since been discharged from the hospital, and has fully returned to her teaching duties. This time from the classroom.
