David McClure has been a science teacher in North Texas for the past three decades.
Because he says he's motivated by "a desire to help others and an innate curiosity," McClure volunteered to be among the first to participate in the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine trial, which was carried out by Benchmark research in Fort Worth.
McClure said the research group was looking for volunteers with high risks, were older, and were frontline workers. The 60-year-old says he has diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart issues, and jumped at the opportunity to help others any way he can. He said, "I just decided, look, I'm going to go with this, I'm going to take a chance with this. This is a part of history. How often do you get a chance to be a part of finding the cure for a virus that has swept across a planet?"
While the participants don't actually know, McClure believe he got the vaccine, whereas others may have just received a placebo. He says a blood test this fall showed he had COVID-19 antibodies, which he says he didn't have before the trial.
