Tech company Canon, which has produced a numerous line of cameras, printers, broadcasting equipment, amongst other things has recently developed a new tactic to make sure their employees are smiling when they head into the office.
Canon recently installed doors in their Chinese offices equipped with A.I. that will only unlock if you smile. If the cameras sense you're frowning, the facial recognition software will keep the door LOCKED!
James Vincent of The Verge feels this is just another attempt for a company "surveilling employees to an unsettling degree with the help of AI and algorithms." He writes that businesses are "monitoring which programs employees use on their computers to gauge their productivity; using CCTV cameras to measure how long they take on their lunch break; and even tracking their movements outside the office using mobile apps."
