"Bitter Sweet Symphony" - The Verve
The release of this song came on the heels of a HUGE legal battle with the Rolling Stones and their former manager Allen Klein. The Verve didn't get permission from Klein to sample the Stones' song "The Last Time." So after a long legal battle, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards were given credits as songwriters, and Allen Klein got ALL the royalties.
"So Alive" - Love & Rockets
Song is about a girl singer Daniel Ash saw at a party. He came to the studio the day after with only the opening line done, writing the rest of the song in just an hour. The band completed recording the song in less than a day.
"A Hazy Shade Of Winter" - The Bangles
The Bangles' version charted higher than the original performed by Simon & Garfunkel on the Billboard Hot 100. Bangles hit #2, and Simon & Garfunkel. hit #13. Song was recorded for the 1987 movie 'Less Than Zero.' Brad Pitt appeared as an extra in the movie, and was paid $38 for his appearance.
"You Can Call Me Al" - Weird Al
Many believe this is the biggest hit song that contains a penny whistle solo. Simon got the inspiration for the title when he met French composer and conductor Pierre Boulez at a party, and he accidentally called Paul "Al," and his wife Peggy "Betty."
