March is of course Women's History Month, and today, March 3, is a very special day for the fight in women's equality.

On this day 109 years ago, in 1913, the first march for women's suffrage occurred in Washington D.C.

Despite this first march occurring in 1913, women had been fighting for the right to vote for the previous 60 years prior!

Per the White House archives, the march was spearheaded by Alice Paul and the National American Woman Suffrage Association, and was led by activist Inez Milholland, who while riding atop a white horse, led over five thousand suffragettes up Pennsylvania Avenue, along with over 20 parade floats, nine bands, and four mounted brigades.

It took another seven years after the march for the Nineteenth Amendment to be ratified on August 18, 1920.

The women who marched on this day in 1913 accomplished their goal of reinvigorating the suffrage movement, as the official parade pamphlet read, they gave "expression to the nation-wide demand for an amendment to the United States Constitution enfranchising women."
