Apparently, we’ve all been playing Monopoly wrong for all these years.
People online are starting to realize that we’ve all ignored one of the basic rules of the game, that has probably alerted the result of every family game over the past 87 years.

Apparently, if a person lands on a property and does not buy it, that property then goes to auction where it is up for grabs for everybody else playing!
A Monopoly fan named Ruben posted about the rule on Twitter back in 2017, and received a bevy of responses from people who were completely unaware of it.
One person wrote, “Literally no one plays it like this. Surely?!” Another added, “Wait, what!?!?! Omg.”
However, some players online were quick to point out they always played with this rule growing up.
One person wrote, “Always amazed by the amount of people that don't know this. HOW CAN YOU BUY A GAME AND NOT READ THE RULES?”
Someone else added, “I have always played it this way since i was a kid in the 80s. 'This is old news. Also I put tax money in the center and whoever lands on free parking gets the loot. Not sure if that is a rule but i use it lol.”
The official Monopoly rules state:
Whenever you land on an unowned property you may buy that property from the Bank at its printed price. You receive the Title Deed card showing ownership, place it face up in front of you.
If you do not wish to buy the property, the Banker sells it at auction to the highest bidder. The buyer pays the Bank the amount of the bid in cash and receives the Title Deed card for that property. Any player, including the one who declined the option to buy it at the printed price, may bid.
Bidding may start at any price.
