An elderly woman residing at the Water's Edge Rehab and Nursing Center in Port Jefferson on Long Island in New York was pronounced dead at 11:15 a.m.

Very sad indeed, but as per protocol, her body was transferred to nearby O.B. Davis Funeral Home, where hours later at 2:09 p.m., she was found to be alive!

Police say that the woman was taken to the hospital after being found alive.

Suffolk County police and the New York State Department of Health told CNN they are investigating the case.  The health department said they cannot comment further because the probe still is underway.

The attorney general's office said in an emailed statement, "This is an awful situation that caused unnecessary trauma for the impacted resident and her loved ones."

The funeral home said to CNN affiliate WABC in a statement, "Out of respect for the privacy and confidentiality of the families we are honored to serve, we are not in a position to comment further on this matter."

CNN has sought comment from the nursing center and the funeral home.
