A woman in her 80s in Japan is the latest victim of an online romance scam.

She sent money to a man claiming to be an astronaut in outer space, who was under attack on his spaceship, and “needed oxygen.”

The woman, who had fallen in love with the scammer, sent him a million yen, around $6,700.

Per CBS News, the woman reportedly lives alone on Japan's northern Hokkaido island.

Officials are now investigating the scam.  A representative issued a warning to other potential victims stating, “If a person you met on social media ever demanded cash from you, please be suspicious of the possibility of scam, and report to police.”
